Nutritional Counselling

What is a Registered Nutritional Consultant?

Registered Nutritional Consultants Practitioner (RNCPs) is professionals trained in nutrition and complimentary therapies who educate individuals and groups about the benefits of a sound nutritional program and healthy lifestyle to encourage the body to achieve optimum health.

Since every person is biochemically unique, individual nutritional imbalances and weaknesses must be assessed. An RNC will recommend specific diets and nutritional support to help their clients build and maintain well-being.

An RNCs helps others to make the best possible food choices. It is important to eat a variety of foods to ensure all essential nutrients are included in the diet. An RNC will introduce new dietary habits, incorporating the latest nutritional breakthroughs, but it may be difficult to achieve optimal health  through food alone. In such cases, RNCs are trained to design personalized dietary supplement programs.

In the past, it was the custom to follow the Canada Food Guide in order to achieve dietary wellness. However, we now are aware that i\t does not meet nutritional requirements for superior health. It does not meet even basic requirements for everyone, as we are all different and our dietary needs vary greatly.

For example, until sensitivities are corrected, some people must avoid certain foods such as most breads and pasta if gluten-intolerant, and dairy if lactose-intolerant.  For others it may be necessary to eat alkaline foods while detoxifying; therefore, the suggested two to three servings of meat per day in Canada Food Guide would be inappropriate.

Environmental pollution, metal toxicity, parasites and allergies are among the other factors that must be considered in constructing a nutritional program.
Educational Requirements:
Educational criteria for RNC certification include significant post-secondary training in the following subjects: anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, allergies, biology, fundamental of nutrition, preventative nutrition, environmental pollution, nutritional pathology, alternative comparative diets, digestion elimination, nutritional symptomatology, psycho-nutrition, life cycle (geriatrics, pediatrics, clinical nutrition, & sports nutrition), research applications, and jurisprudence.

RNCs are certified by the International Association of  Nutritional Consultants of Canada. IONC is a voluntary, non-profit, incorporated organization that is not associated with any school or teaching facility, but independently assesses the qualifications of those who apply for professional membership as RNCs. It was founded in 1983 to help inform the public about nutritional consulting and to provide standards of practice for nutritional consultants.

A visit to an RNC will be an educational experience where one will learn to make lifestyle changes that have a long-lasting effect on the quality of life. Some insurance companies are now covering the fees for RNC services for IONC members.
