What is Acupuncture?

The Ancient Chinese art of healing was established based on philosophical ideas with regards to an individual’s natural energies called YIN and YANG. These energies complement and yet oppose each other.  They are part of everything in the natural world and they must be well balanced for optimum good health. It is one of the oldest and most successful methods the world has known in treating acute and chronic disorder.

By the time most patients come to an acupuncturist, they have tried everything else, with little or no long-term results. Now the good news… Acupuncture is able to help a large group of people who consorted to this ancient method and experienced relief from symptoms and a dramatic reduction in pain.  Many wished they had come sooner.
How does Acupuncture work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Life energy (Qi) is the force that moves through the body like a river, irrigating and nourishing the tissues and glands and is believed that it is responsible for an individual’s health and well-being.  In our body, the Qi travels along 12 meridians or channels, connected to specific organs and body functions.
A common theory as to how acupuncture works is that the needles stimulate the nervous system to release pain-relieving substances (endorphin) in the muscles, spinal cord and the brain.  Secondly, there may be a blockage at certain points, causing sluggish flow or accumulation of toxins.  Acupuncture clears that blockage to ensure proper flow of Qi.

Without drugs or invasive surgery, acupuncture is able to promote physical and emotional well-being, simply by tapping into the body’s natural healing abilities. The effect of acupuncture is essentially to influence and enhance the body’s own internal regulating system.

What are the needles like?

A skilled acupuncturist uses disposable sterile needles so there is no risk of infection. They are hair-thin, solid and mostly made of high quality stainless steel. The points are smooth so they do not cut the skin as hollow hypodermic needles do.

Does it hurt?

If any sensation is experienced during insertion, it is compared to a mosquito bite. Once the needles are in place, no pain is felt. Following treatment, it is common to feel a sense of relaxation and relief.

What can I expect on my first treatment?

Great care is taken to ensure your comfort and well-being.  A short case history, medical background and symptoms, will be noted.  You will be left in a quiet, private room where you rest on a comfortable bed, followed by an examination of the area of your concern. After evaluation, the practitioner will insert a few needles on specific acupuncture points. You will not even feel most of them.

You will be left in the room with subdued lighting and relaxing music for about 20 minutes.  Most people fully relax and even fall asleep. After the needles have been removed, you should feel better and more relaxed.  Sometimes it takes a little longer to have noticeable effect.  So please be patient. Not every body responds to acupuncture instantly, but remember, 7 out of 10 do.
